In 2022, true to his adventurous nature andafter a lifetime spent in Tehran, Iran’s capital city, Mostafa Alizadegan movedto Prince Edward Island. This life-changing move immersed him in a newenvironment and propelled him to seek personal reflection and growthopportunities. He describes Iran as “A land of immense culture, exquisitecuisine, beautiful architecture, and rich hospitality. It is a place that hasbeen historically significant for thousands of years.” Although he arrived aloneat PEI at first, he was joined by his wife a year later.
While adjusting to life on the Island, Mostafa has found there to be some similarities between both countries, albeit that key societal differences in culture, religion, language, and politics weigh more heavily. “Persian or Farsi is the predominant language spoken in Iran. I love wintertime here in PEI. In Iran, the weather in the north compared to the south can be as different as night and day,” he says.
Mostafa is an artist and believes in its power to change people, preserve and transform culture, and provide opportunities for expression. “My passions are art and teaching,” he says. “I am first and foremost an artist, then a teacher. I see both as a career and a hobby.” His most preferred mediums are photography, videography, and graphic design. While in Iran, Mostafa taught as a university lecturer in arts, branding, and marketing, sharing his knowledge and expertise with the next generation; he saw this work as a responsibility to be of service to his community. “That remains one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I am really proud of many of my students who have now become established artists.”
Since arriving in PEI, Mostafa has been enthralled by the unique experiences and friendly people he has encountered. “The landscape alone gives me so much inspiration and material to create and reflect on,” he says. Because of his career background, Mostafa has pivoted into marketing and communications. He recently landed a Marketing and Social Media Specialist position at Rodd Hotels and Resorts. “This has been a chance for me to use the skills I already have while also growing, learning, and getting new experiences,” he says.
Mostafa highlights the vital role that PEI Connectors has played in his journey, particularly in understanding the local business environment, the needs of the community, and the Island's work culture—an invaluable resource for newcomers. He has also worked as a freelance photographer with PEI Connectors and collaborated on various projects. Additionally, Mostafa is an active Greater Charlottetown Area Chamber of Commerce member, further integrating himself into the Island's professional and entrepreneurial networks. "Working with PEI Connectors has made such a difference for me. I recommend the program and staff highly," he says. He also credits the support and encouragement of his wife as pivotal to his decision to leave the comfort and stability of life in Iran in pursuit of growth and adventure on distant shores. “Her support has meant so much to me on this journey. It has not always been easy,” he says.
