Embracing Change and Opportunity on Prince Edward Island

A New Beginning: Seeking a Brighter Future in a New Land

In 2022, Hoda Nikakhtar immigrated to Canada to search for a better quality of life and to explore new opportunities for personal and professional growth. She arrived on Prince Edward Island from Iran, a country known for its rich history, vibrant culture, and stunning landscapes, where ancient traditions blend with innovation and modernity. Canada’s high standard of living, inclusive society, and exceptional education system provided the ideal environment for her to thrive. With her move to the Great White North, Hoda aimed to pursue new experiences and secure a brighter future.

Hoda found that the friendliness and warmth of Islanders stood in contrast to the reserved nature of interactions in many urban centres in Iran. With Persian as the primary language spoken in Iran, the language barrier was an immediate challenge to overcome. Nevertheless, Hoda was taken by the natural beauty of the Island and has made it a place she is proud to call home. “When I first imagined Canada, I pictured a vast country blanketed in snow and extreme cold, a perception influenced by my own sensitivity to low temperatures. As I stepped off the plane, the cold was so intense that I was shivering uncontrollably. However, what truly made a lasting impression on me during my first few days here was the openness and warm greetings of the Island's residents,” she says

Thanks to my connection with PEI Connectors, I was able to obtain the information I needed in the most efficient way possible.

Blending Experience with New Possibilities

With a bachelor’s degree in agricultural engineering, a master’s degree in business administration, and more than 10 years of professional experience in the medical equipment industry, Hoda led a dynamic life and had a fulfilling career in Iran. “One of the key elements of my success was my commitment to providing outstanding service to my clients,” she says. In addition to her robust educational and professional background, Hoda began to complete courses after she arrived in PEI and focused on exploring job opportunities that matched her work experience, skills, and interests. These efforts paid off when she landed a job as an Event Manager Assistant at Distinct Magic Events, a full-service event management company in PEI.

Support, Mentorship, and a Future in Education

Since moving to Canada, Hoda has repurposed her skills and transferred them across industries. She has her sights set on yet another pivot into early childhood education, and is completing the program at Holland College. She credits having supportive mentorship as having a profound impact on her personal and professional growth, especially as a newcomer who once had limited knowledge and information about workplace regulations, workers’ rights, and viable industries for career growth. "Thanks to my connection with PEI Connectors, I was able to obtain the information I needed in the most efficient way possible. During my sessions with my Program Officer, Elmira Moghimi, I had the opportunity to express my needs and concerns. She then connected me with individuals who provided accurate and reliable information. This support not only helped me overcome numerous challenges but also gave me the confidence to move forward in my professional journey," she says.
